More Than a Marketing Internship

Going into my last summer in college, I wanted an opportunity that would help me better understand the marketing industry, but I wasn’t exactly sure where I saw myself fitting in. Marketing is such a broad field, and while I had learned a lot in the classroom, I was looking for an experience that would show me what the profession actually looks like day to day.

That’s exactly what I found in Adcom’s Future Marketers Program.

Over four weeks, the program immersed students in agency life through hands-on learning, mentorship and real client work. We experienced firsthand how strategy, creativity, analytics and collaboration come together to solve real business challenges. It was an opportunity that gave me a perspective on agency life that I would not have been able to gain anywhere else.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The program covered a wide range of marketing disciplines, including messaging and creative strategy, social media and influencer marketing, search engine optimization and data analytics, and professional development. Each week introduced us to new concepts while showing how every piece of the marketing puzzle fits together.

One of the highlights was learning from a variety of guest speakers, including university professors, Adcom team members and industry leaders from organizations such Vitamix and the Cleveland Guardians. Hearing their stories and insights helped bridge the gap between what we learn in the classroom and what happens in the workplace.

More importantly, these sessions reinforced an idea that stayed with me throughout the month: there is no single path into marketing. Every professional had a unique story, and each one offered valuable advice about building a successful career through curiosity, adaptability and continuous learning.

Real-World Marketing Experience with a Real Client

What made the Future Marketers Program especially unique was the opportunity to work on a real client project.

My team partnered with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Our challenge was to help increase awareness and engagement for Mandel Days, an initiative designed to connect the community with the museum through educational and interactive experiences.

From the start, we approached the project like an agency team. We researched the audience, evaluated opportunities, developed ideas and collaborated on recommendations that could help the museum reach a broader audience. The experience pushed us to think strategically while also considering how creative ideas could support larger marketing goals.

Working on a live project changed the way I view marketing. It taught me that great campaigns are built on much more than creative concepts. They require research, teamwork, thoughtful planning and a clear understanding of the audience. Seeing that process firsthand was one of the most valuable parts of the program.

Lessons I'll Carry Forward

Going into the program, I hoped to strengthen my marketing knowledge and gain professional experience. I accomplished both, but I also left with something more meaningful: confidence.

The Future Marketers Program challenged me to present ideas, collaborate with new people and step outside of my comfort zone. It allowed me to see how professionals communicate, solve problems and work together to deliver results for clients. Those experiences helped me grow not only as a marketer but also as a future professional.

Another aspect that stood out was the culture at Adcom. Everyone was approachable, willing to answer questions and eager to share their experiences. As a student trying to navigate potential career paths, those conversations were incredibly valuable. They reminded me that learning doesn’t stop when a presentation ends or a project is completed. Some of the best lessons came from simple conversations with people who were willing to offer guidance and advice.

Looking Ahead

As I prepare for my final year at John Carroll University, I am grateful for everything I gained through Adcom’s Future Marketers Program. The experience provided a realistic look into agency life, strengthened my understanding of marketing and connected me with mentors and peers who share similar passions and goals.

Most importantly, it confirmed my excitement for a career in marketing.

For students considering the program in the future, my advice is simple: stay curious. Ask questions, seek out conversations and take advantage of every opportunity to learn. The more engaged you are, the more you'll gain from the experience.

The Future Marketers Program is more than a four-week summer experience. It's an opportunity to learn, grow and discover what a career in marketing can truly look like. For me, it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my college journey so far.
